house decor advise needed

ARGH...i wrote this whole post and then it disappears. OK so for xmas this year I want to ask for stuff for the house (because there is an ever growing list of things we want/want to do and it would be great if we could get some things as gifts). The problem is, we don't exactly know what we want. I mean, we know we want curtains for upstairs, but since we haven't painted yet we don't know what kind/color we want. Also, we know we want wall art, but have yet to find any (I wish I could hire someone to find art for my entire house...it's so darn hard for me). I can't ask for giftcards because people don't like to give a bunch of giftcards (although really I would prefer this the most). So...any suggestions?

I went to BBB this weekend and actually found these curtains that I really like. The question is what color will we paint the room. It's a HUGE room with lots of light. Our bedspread is blue and brown. I was thinking of keeping the walls a neutral either cream color or soft tan color, and then using tese curtains (in blue) as an accent. Do you think that would look nice? Or do you think we should paint the room blue and use neutral curtains?

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=117483

We also looked at some wall art and found the following. Do you think any of these would look nice against our red wall in the dining room?

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=16880574&RN=2202

http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1435&f=664

http://www.signals.com/signals/Wall-Decor_1HA/View-All-Wall-Decor_1HF/Item_Poppy-Anemone-Paintings_HG3195_ps_cti-1HF.html

one final post of the day

It really bothers me reading about all this healthcare reform business. I won't go too far into my views or get on a soapbox...but I hate it when everything I read says that 50 million people are uninsured. My understanding is that most of those 50 million people are illegal immegrants who I personally don't think should get free health insurance.

charleston eating

Now that we've booked a place to stay and I've figured out things to do, I wanted to do some reserach on good places to eat in charleston. I went to tripadvisor and from there looked at each of the top restaurant's menus. Pretty much everywhere is seafood and I hate seafood :( Plus, most of the top rates places are REALLY expensive. Maybe I'm just not much of a food snob, but I like good old american food that doesn't cost $30+ a person for just the main course. Plus most of the restaurants seem to have the same thing (shrimp and grits, seafood, filet, etc). I understand they want southern cooking, but I would like to get a variety of food...and more normal foods that aren't for the refined pallete. So if you have suggestions for just your normal, but tastey food places in charleston please let me know. Thanks!

vitamins

OK ladies I had my annual exam today and my doc said I should take vitamins for a multitude of reasons (I know I don't eat a nutritious balanced meal, as a woman and one with a mom that had breast cancer I should take certain vitamins, apparently I'm underweight, etc).

So...I'm curious if any of you take vitamins and can recommend anything specifically designed for women my age. Now...Mike and I are not trying to get pregnant yet and probably won't for at least one more year if not longer...but should I take prenatal vitamins now? I asked my doc about getting pregnant and vitamins, etc and she said that 3 months before I want to start trying that I should set up an appt with her and then we would go over all that. Does that mean I shouldn't take prenatals until 3 months before? I know some people who took it a year before. So just trying to get your advise...should I just get a really good multivitamin now or should I just go ahead and take prenatal ones now? Also, my doc said I needed to take omega 3 supplements...any good ones out there?

Thanks ladies!

me again

OK so I was unsuccessful finding any cute little dresses for a rehearsal dinner or the honeymoon. BUT, I did see a BUNCH online at VS. And they are cheap...most of these are $25!!! So...which ones do you like? I think I may buy a few, and see what they look line on me. If they don't work out I cna always send them back. I really wish VS had a clothing store. Some of their stuff fits great, other things are too big, long, etc on me. Keep thinking sunny thoughts tomorrow afternoon!!!!!

success

So I went to bed bath and beyond as well as linens and things determined to find darn bedding....and SUCCESS!!!! I decided to take everyone's advise and skip the bed in a bag, and go for a duvet and down comforter (or in my case down alternative). I don't know if there is really a difference, I would just hate to only have down and then someone be allergic to it. Anyway, here is what I registered for. I only have 2 bedrooms done...still need to find the 3rd set. But that way I am still registered at the same # of places, and I got good sheets seperatly. I just hope that these sets don't get discountinued between now and our wedding. So if anyone is looking for an xmas gift for me...or wants to get a head start on our wedding registry here's what to get :-) I would be so mad if these got discontionued before we got all the pieces for our wedding. Anyway...thoughts?

update

So, I ended up getting 2 of the three (didn't get the ecommerce job but I honestly feel that was for the best). I called the recruiter for the risk job adn told her that I currently had another offer but wanted know about the risk one and didn't want to leave people hanging. They said technically they have to keep a job posted for 5 days before they can give an offer and it's only been posted for one, but then she quickly called me back after speaking with the hiring manager adn gave me an offer. The offers are exactly the same because they still wouldn't compete intercompany for a role. But, the offer was much better than I originally expected which was a nice surprise. So I met with another manager in the risk group, as well as spoke with a friend of one of my coworkers who works in risk to get their perspective. I definetly like the people on both sides...and I think there is potentially more room for growth on the risk side. I think the workplace role is definetly less hours and more flexible, but that's not to say that the risk role is not flexible either. It's not finance so it's not as hectic, but there will be times when you work long hours (like quarter ends), but not to the extent I'm used to I think. Decisions decisions. Either way Im sure it will be a great move...and it's definetly a great position to be one to choose from 2 different jobs. Plus the offer is better than I expected to overall it's been a pretty good, exciting day (and the one year mark till my wedding which I think is a good sign). Any other thoughts or advise I would gladly take it. I think I have to let them know by tomorrow...monday at the latest but part of me wants to have something nailed down so I can enjoy the weekend. Start date would be sept 16th. OK thanks guys!!

Puppy Madness

what a fun weekend. So like I posted yesterday, we went to Asheville and picked out a cutie little puppy. Even though we can't pick him up till march, we got so excited that we went out to Petsmart today and bought a BUNCH of puppy stuff. It was so much fun to look at all the cute things...and seeing all the people walking around the store with their cutie little dogs. I can't wait to bring my little pup to the store so everyone can make a fuss over him :-) We must've spent like 2 hours looking at pet stuff..and a few hundred bucks too. Sooo worth it. I wish we had him now :( I miss him already!!

Omar's replacement

I finally found a really nice hair salon to go to around here. I've been to 2 places before this one...each time it's been a quick, cheap, spray your ends and cut them and let you on your way kinda place. And maybe I'm just a hair salon snob, but I'm used to being pampered and going to a nice salon where they wash your hair and cut it nicely and put all kinds of good smelling products in your hair. Yes, it's expensive, but it's my hair and I have to live with it.

So anyway, I went to this place haircolorexperts and a guy named Matthew did my hair. He did an AWESOME job...maybe better than Omar, and explained everything he did. Plus, he's a really cool guy that you can easily talk to for hours. Don't get me wrong...Omar is sexy in that exotic kinda way, but he's not much of a talker...and this guy was hilarious and just really chill. So I'm very happy that I found a replacement for Omar. I probably won't go to him everytime to get my haircut...since he's pricey, but I will go to him like twice a year or for a new 'do or color or something. He said that when he does color he likes to use 3 colors instead of just one...which intrigued me so maybe at somepoint I'll get my hair colored by him. OK off to take a nap before midnight bowling :-)

healthy eating

Mike and I decided we need more fiber in our diets (we eat well, but we don't incorporate a whole lot of veggies or fruit). So, I went out the other day and bought a ton of stuff. I'm not really a huge fan of the green stuff..but I will do my best to eat these. On the menu this week:
stuffed peppers
steak stir fry
enchiladas
hamburgers with sweet potato fries
steak with salad (I bought pepperoncini's for my salad like olive garden..yummy!!!)
swedish meatballs over egg noodles with salad

I also bought some oranges and grapes. I hope we can keep it up :-)

2006 goals

So now that the new year is in full swing, I have a couple of things I would like to accomplish this year. But first...a reflection on last year. Last year was such a huge year for changes. I quit my old job and started a new job (technically did it in nov 2004, but whatever). It has turned out well so far. More stress, but more work to do and I enjoy it a bit more than the old job. I met a wonderful guy and have been dating him for over a year now (my longest relationship ever...and first relationship in forever). I liked him so much I decided to pack up and move 3 hours down the road. The change has been difficult at times, but I'm happy I did it. I even started working from home...which is a good thing cause it saves on time and gas money, and I get a lot of errands run, but because I don't have any friends close by I find myself alone and bored a lot :(. So that's pretty much been my year. Now here are my goals for 2006 (not resolutions...but things I want to accomplish rather)

1. Get in shape and go to the gym regularly (I think it's like a law that this has to be a new years goal)
2. Get scuba certified (been snorkeling and loved it...so we'll see...can be expensive)
3. save much dinero (I save a lot as it is...but I want this to be my best year yet of saving)
4. Read Dan Brown books (I've started the Da Vinci Code...pretty good so far)
5. Make 5 new friends
6. Join an extracurricular activity (I want to find a dance class...maybe a sport...we'll see)
7. Get a puppy
8. Travel to Eqypt.

So it's in writing...we'll see how many of those I accomplish. Although I want this to be a year of savings...I want to do a lot of things that will cost a lot of money like eqypt, puppy, scuba, etc. So wish me luck in the new year!!!

NO car inspections in SC?!?!?

so I called a Merchants here to set up a time to get my car inspected. Apparently SC doesn't have car inspections. They said I didn't need one. That is soo bizarre...how is that possible? My car could be polluting the air and spewing all kinds of crap out of it and that's ok??? very strange. But I guess I don't need to worry about that. Does anyone else know about this???

Round one of East Coast Tour

WE MADE IT. Round one of travel is over. The trip actually was not that bad. Miraculously (sp??) we drove for a little over 11 hours and didn't turn the radio on once. Mike slept most of the time I was driving...and I slept a little, but the rest of the time we just talked and stuff. We did listen to the "learn to speak italian" cd for about 30 min...very difficult to learn italian while you are driving, but it was cool. I remember some of it.

The scenery was great...mapquest brought us a weird way, but it was shorter than taking 95. We drove through the mountains of NC and Virginia...saw a LOT of cows. We saw VT and I gave a shout out to Grumpy B. There was surprisingly a lot of snow. Then we drove through west virginia, maryland and PA before hitting Jersey adn finally NY. It would've been shorter but the directions brought us into manhattan...we got to see Macy's at herald square and it was hopping even at midnight! Anyway, plan for today is have lunch with mike's parents and then hit the city so we can see the tree, rockefeller center, etc. Very Excited!!!!

Harry Potter Marathon

So this weekend Mike and I rented Harry Potter 1,2 and 3. He hasn't seen any of the movies or read the books...but he wants to before we can see the new movie out now. Well, I am going crazy not seeing the movie yet, so we had a HP movie marathon this weekend. Mike got really into it. He stayed up till after 1am watching them. I fell asleep, but he kept waking me up asking questions. And that's hard...cause I've read all 6 books out and so I know info, but I can't remember what was in which book....so I'm afraid to answer questions in case it comes up in another movie. Oh well...he'll have to stay in the dark till the rest of the movies come out....or until he reads the books :-)

In other news, last night we went to Carowinds Winterfest. Really unimpressive. They made it sound really fun and exciting...and we saw and did everything withinn an hour. Oh well. The only roller coaster open was Top Gun...which was a lot of fun. We saw the lights and saw a really dorky xmas show in the theatre...and then got some candy, walked around and we were done. It definetly was geared more towards kids. We did see Spongebob and the Rugrats though :-) I wanted to see the parade...but that wasn't until 8:30...and it was 6:45 and we couldn't find anything to do to fill the time. Oh well. Guess I'll get my xmas spirit in high gear when we go to NY. I am making Mike take me to the city to see the tree and rockefeller center. I haven't been since I was a kid..very excited!

so with all these hollywood breakups and such I was curious. Not that any of us are rich and or famous, but if your boyfriend/girlfriend or current spouse (whatever the case may be) asked you for a prenup...would you sign one?

scary moment

so I just had one of the scariest things happen to me. I had just started blow drying my hair when a few sparks flew out of the dryer and I could see a small flame and it died. One of the sparks hit me and it kinda burned. I dropped the dryer down on the counter for a few seconds and then turned it off real quick. I wasn't realy sure what to do cause I didn't want to touch it or get electricuted or anything. I waited a few more seconds and unplugged it. I guess it's ok now that it's unplugged...guess I'll need to go get a new blow dryer :( and I really liked this one. Oh well. That was really scary though. I was afraid I was going to burn the house down.

Just for future reference in case it happens again, does anyone know what I should do in a situation like that? I mean if it went ahead and caused a fire it would be an electrical fire and I don't know what to do for those...other than don't use water!

the perfect day off

Yesterday was just the most perfect day. Mike and I took the day off (I worked till 11:30pm the night before so I totally deserved it). We slept in a little late, and then got some things done around that house like dishes, laundry, mike paid some bills etc. While he was getting his work done, I hit up Kohls and bought 2 pairs of pants (I found another pair of the Glo jeans that look so cute on me). Anyway, Mike and I had lunch and then decided to go run some errands.

We went to the bank, but because it was Vet's day it was closed. Then we went to the UPS store and then shopped around in the center across the street. We went to Linens and Thing s(I think Mike's new fav store). He loves kitchen gadgets and we spent a good 45 min in there and walked out with a lot of stuff. Granted, most of it was xmas gifts for Mike's sister. Next, we were off to the Lowes to get his parents a turkey fryer for xmas. At that point it was a little after 4 and Mike and I were getting hungry. We decided to get Subway for dinner and then went to see Derailed as an early matinee. The movie was good...a thriller for sure. It was weird cause we went into the theatre when it was bright and sunny, and walked out and it was nighttime. After that we went back to lowes for something adn then headed home.

The perfect end to the day...How to Lose a Guy in 10 days was on tv so we watched that. Then I went to bed while Mike played XMEN. Just the most perfect, and productive day...beautiful fall day!
