book suggestions

A random Post. Now that I've finished all the Harry Potter books, I need something new to read. Mike and I have gone to the bookstore like 5 times and I can never find anything. I loved the Harry Potter books, so maybe something like that would be good. I'm not into sci fi - I like easy reads, but books that are smart and keep you guessing. Not really into the romance novels either.

I used to read the Patricia Cornwell series...I like murder mystery stuff, but all the books I see at the store all sound the same. Myabe I've become bored with this type of book??? Also, a lot of them seem like a series, so I can't just read the latest book that came out. I dont know. I don't know much about what authors are good...cause really the only books I've read lately are the two I've mentioned already. Anyone have suggestions??

Thanks for the tips. I'm not really sure what genre I like. Like I said, I always liked murder mystery...and I think I still do, but so much of it juts sounds the same. How many twists can you make on the same topic ya know?

What I really liked about Harry Potter was that it was an easy read, had some interesting little fantasy things it in, but wasn't like goblins and dwarfs and stuff like Lord of the Rings. Not sure I want a book like that. Plus, there was some mystery and evil and in Harry Potter. But, it wans't like some investitagor who is on the "biggest case of their life" or whatever. Am I making any sense?
Mike suggested Chronicles of Narnia..he has the books at home in NY and since the movie is comimg out, we are going to get the books and read them at Thanksgiving.

Left Behind is totally fascinating.

You should read Janet Evonovich!!!! She's hysterical! They're mysteries with lots of hysterical stuff. In the Plum novels, the main character's car gets blown up or otherwise destroyed in every single book. And her grandmother is always up to something wacky. It's great. But you can read just a random one and enjoy them.

I really liked Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It's a series, but there are only three of them so far.

Harry Potter type stuff: I LOVE Anne McCaffrey, but she has dragons and unicorn people so that's fantasy. Have you read the Narnia Chronicles? Awesome and easy/fast. Aw man, I can't remember my favorite books ever. They're at least as good as Harry Potter. The first book is about these kids who find out they're magicians. Aha! Diane Duane is the author! The one about the cat magicians is my favorite book ever - well, it's at least in competition with "The Little Princess."

More re Diane Duane: The two books are "Book of Night with Moon" and "To Visit the Queen." The latter is the one about the cats.

Another correction: Both of the Duane books named are about the cats. Doh! The ones about the kid wizards start with "So You Want to Be a Wizard." It's a trilogy.

Oh yeah, I have some chick lit too. Big city young women doing crazy things - juggling careers, romance, and a love of shopping. Those totally crack me up.

not sure how I feel about chic lit. I can't say I don't like it, cause I've never read a chic lit book before. But I do know that even though I love romantic movies, I don't like reading sappy stuff in a book. I mean, if it's intertwined in there it's ok...but if it's the main theme, not sure I want it!

i've recently gotten into using the public library near brandon's house. libraries are a great, cheap way to try out some different books.

Sappiness is usually not the point of chick lit - it's usually the shopping. Or at least it seems that way to me. Of course, I have been reading the Shopaholic books as of late... *giggle*
